Discover in this blog why Zoutelande is a popular starting point for countless trips in Zeeland!
Zeeland is known for its beautiful beaches and picturesque landscapes. What many don’t know is that this province boasts the most sunshine hours in the Netherlands. Zoutelande and other coastal towns in Zeeuws-Vlaanderen were once popular with painters for this very reason. Along Zoutelande’s beach, you’ll find relative peace, with beach cabins, pavilions, and loungers completing your coastal day. Take a beach walk past the typical wooden groynes and watch the ships sail by.
Zoutelande and the village of the same name are separated only by a dike and a strip of dunes, allowing you to walk along the dike and enjoy stunning views in both directions. Just behind the dunes, the Langestraat awaits you with plenty of restaurants, shops, and cafés.
West of Zoutelande lies the village of Westkapelle — home to clean beaches, great eateries, and unique lighthouses. This village is also loved by walkers and cyclists, as it borders a forest and a creek. Westkapelle is an ideal destination for a solid beach walk from Zoutelande. As you walk along its coast, you’ll understand why the dunes here are among the highest in the country — the views are spectacular. One highlight is the lighthouse 't Hoge Licht. Once part of the St. Willibrordus Church, a fire destroyed the nave. The surviving tower was repurposed into a 52-meter high beacon!
From Zoutelande, a cycling tour or long walk takes you to the beautiful Castle Westhove. Dating back to the 13th century, the castle was once much larger, but suffered major damage in the Eighty Years’ War. Still, you wouldn’t guess it today — it’s no ruin or sad remnant. Several towers and a moat still give it the grandeur of a medieval fortress. From the castle garden, take a short walk to the Motte castle — a wooden tower on an artificial mound. The surrounding nature is also worth exploring. Adjacent to the gardens lies De Manteling, a nature reserve you can explore on foot or by bike. It stretches all the way to the sea and features picnic benches and resting spots along the way.
North of the Walcheren peninsula lies Vrouwenpolder, known for its wide beaches and watersports like kitesurfing. At Kite and Windsurf School Vertigo, you can also try kite buggying or archery. Between the village and the coast lies the Oranjezon nature reserve — a stunning dune landscape with forest, water, and wild horses. Tip: visit Fort den Haak, a subtropical garden with palm trees and a large pond.
A wonderful day trip from your holiday home in Zoutelande is a scenic cycling route via Serooskerke to Burgh-Haamstede. This village is surrounded by nature and ideal if you love discovering historic places. From a distance, you’ll spot the Westerlichttoren, and on the edge of Burgh stands the 13th-century Slot Haamstede — a small but elegant castle with its own moat. For more history, take a walk to the Zeepeduinen, where you’ll find a former World War II command post.
While you're in the area, visit Slot Moermond in Renesse — a graceful example of medieval architecture set in nature. As you approach, you're welcomed by a beautiful driveway. Up close, you’ll notice the castle features multiple architectural styles. Have extra time to walk? Follow a trail from Renesse through a nature reserve and along the beach before reaching the castle.
From Zoutelande, you can walk along the beach to Vlissingen, one of Zeeland’s most popular seaside towns. The lively Bellamy promenade is perfect for a break — enjoy a drink on a sunny terrace. Want to explore more of the area or nearby cities? Hop on your bike and follow the coastal route to Middelburg. This beautiful fortified city is close to Vlissingen and offers historic charm, from the Lange Jan tower and the Gothic town hall to monuments of national heroes — perfect for a walk through Dutch history.
Whether you want to get some fresh sea air or soak up the sun, Zoutelande is an excellent choice! Can’t get enough of the Zeeland coast? Take a beach walk from your holiday home in Zoutelande to Vlissingen or Westkapelle, or cycle to towns like Burgh-Haamstede. Many nearby locations invite you to explore the beach, castles, and scenic estates. And wherever you go, you’ll quickly understand why artists once found endless inspiration along the Zeeland Riviera!
