Sauerland is a holiday region not far from the border and offers a wealth of sights and activities. Rolling hills, dense forests intersected by winding rivers, and villages with traditional half-timbered houses dominate the landscape. In summer, it’s a recognized hiker’s paradise, while in winter a thick blanket of snow awaits winter sports enthusiasts. Popular Destination Sauerland

Sauerland is a compact region with many charming destinations. Be sure to visit the following exemplary towns with medieval charm and explore Sauerland’s diverse natural landscapes!

Freudenberg

When walking near the edge of Freudenberg, the view of its white half-timbered houses instantly draws you in to explore the town up close. Although it’s a small village, there’s no risk of boredom. Two museums take you on a fascinating journey through time. At the Mitendrin Museum, you’ll get a unique insight into traditional watchmaking, and the Technical Museum showcases early crafts and industrial history.

Iserlohn

Another town in Sauerland with roots going back to the early Middle Ages is Iserlohn. Here you’ll find several churches and museums that tell the story of the town’s special heritage, particularly tied to the iron mining industry of the past. Just outside Iserlohn lies the Seilersee lake, surrounded by attractive hiking trails.

Arolsen Castle

Not everyone knows that a significant piece of Dutch royal history is tied to Arolsen Castle. This impressive palace, with its striking yellow facade, is the birthplace of Queen Emma. That alone makes it worth visiting—and the palace itself is a masterpiece of Baroque architecture. Though it’s still inhabited, parts of the stunning interior are open to the public.

Historic Steam Train Ride

Step back in time with a ride on the Sauërländer Kleinbahn steam train. The railway operates from April to October. Between Herscheid and Hüingshausen, and on the route from Plettenberg to Köbbinghausen, you’ll glide through scenic landscapes and feel as if you’ve entered a different era.

Erlebnisberg Kappe

Enjoy a unique view of Winterberg from the suspension bridge at Erlebnisberg Kappe. On the other side, an exciting attraction awaits: a toboggan ride that takes you over half a kilometre downhill. You can also return in winter for the bobsled run!

Phantasialand Amusement Park in Brühl

Sauerland isn’t just about charming towns, hiking trails, and scenic views—it also features a real amusement park, perfect for a successful family holiday. Themed zones include thrilling roller coasters like the one racing through the ‘Colorado Mines’ and a wild water ride past waterfalls.

Hiking Trails Through Sauerland

If you’re coming to Sauerland especially for its award-winning hiking trails, there are many routes to enjoy! One of the most diverse trails is the Rothaarsteig, which leads you along babbling brooks, mountain meadows, wide views, and heathland. The white half-timbered villages complete the picture-perfect scenery. A nature area that holds a special place in the hearts of many hikers and nature lovers is the Kahler Asten plateau. At over 800 meters in altitude, you’ll walk through heather landscapes while the Lenne and Odeborn rivers wind down the mountainside.

Winterberg

In winter, Winterberg is a top destination for winter sports just across the border. The area is popular with skiers but also welcomes visitors who simply want to enjoy the snowy landscape. You’ll find cross-country trails, sledding hills, and even the chance for a romantic sleigh ride. With average altitudes of 800 meters, the area isn’t extremely high, but snow is often guaranteed, and snow cannons provide backup. Especially beginner skiers will feel at home here, though there are also some more challenging slopes for those seeking progression. Winterberg is an ideal ski resort for learning the sport—without having to drive long distances.

Holiday Homes in Winterberg

Winterberg and the surrounding area offer a wide range of hotels and holiday homes. Free parking is no issue near the ski lifts, and the town is full of warm, welcoming restaurants. While it may not compete with the steep Alpine descents, Winterberg certainly delivers the full winter sports experience!
