The tourist region of Costa Blanca in the southeast of Spain is inviting for a holiday on the Spanish coast for several reasons. Looking for a popular destination on the Costa Blanca? Enjoy historical charm as you wander through winding streets and past cathedrals, or be amazed by impressive fortresses! The beaches, boulevards, and guaranteed sunshine are of course major ingredients that have given this "White Coast" its reputation for relaxing beach holidays and winter escapes. However, in this article we’ll tell you which sights and places truly do justice to this region!
The beaches of the Costa Blanca attract many tourists for a relaxing day in the Spanish sun. However, the miles-long coastline with fine sand is also interspersed with secluded coves, beautiful rock formations, and crystal-clear water. The town of Jávea near Alicante is a perfect gem where you can enjoy green-covered cliffs and a peaceful beach. Even better: from this bay, you can kayak along the coast. A unique tip if you're heading out on the water: paddle your kayak into the sea caves of Jávea!
Jávea is also known for the so-called Miradores de Jávea. These are a series of viewpoints overlooking the sea and rugged coastline. At one of these viewpoints, Mirador Cap de la Nau, you can not only take in the view, but also enjoy a delicious paella. After your meal, you’ll return satisfied to a holiday villa with a pool. Because this area is located higher up, you’ll get a beautiful view over the Mediterranean Sea!
In the city of Elche, about half an hour’s drive from Alicante, you’ll find one of the Costa Blanca’s notable attractions. Here, instead of wide and long beaches, you’ll find a gigantic palm garden! This enormous palm park, originally created by the Moors, is the largest in Europe and is also referred to as the city of palms. The beautiful botanical garden and the old town with the Basilica of Santa Maria are also worth a visit.
Alicante is a large seaside town on the Costa Blanca and one of the most popular cities on the Spanish coast for winter holidays. The boulevard, the panoramic Santa Barbara Castle, the beaches, and several regional attractions are all good reasons to rent a holiday home in Alicante. The old El Barrio district has a picturesque Spanish flair, with colorful houses, narrow streets, and stairs that lead to beautiful city views. A notable feature of the resort is the Rambla Méndez Núñez: a long boulevard with mosaic paving, flanked by stalls and palm trees. The gnarled old ficus trees at Plaza de Elche are particularly striking.
Prefer good restaurants nearby? Then choose a hotel in the old town or the marina. Along the harbor, for example, you’ll find the elegant Darsena restaurant. Pleasant views of the harbor and sea are combined here with typical rice and meat dishes on a sunny terrace!
A historical attraction in the hinterland of Benidorm is the Moorish fortress of Guadelest; a castle largely carved out of rock. The village is historically linked to the castle, with its old core enclosed by the fortress walls. Notable features include the white tower that hints at Castell de Guadelest’s former might and the stone-carved entrance gate. It’s quite a climb to reach the village, but once at the top, you can easily spend some time there enjoying the sweeping views over a mountainous landscape and a green valley. Head to one of the restaurants like Xorta Restaurante, where you can enjoy a panoramic dinner from the conservatory, or visit the various shops and museums.
The surrounding area also caters to the annual influx of tourists, with many accommodations nearby. Many people who rent a holiday home in this area also take a jeep tour to the Algar waterfalls; a special collection of waterfalls flowing from the rocks. If you’re renting a holiday home in Benidorm or the historic seaside town of Altea, a visit to Castell de Guadelest and the village of the same name is one of the best inland outings. The drive there and the lush mountain scenery around Guadelest make it a memorable experience!
In various places along the Costa Blanca, you can already admire the first almond blossoms in February. Especially in the regions of Alicante, Murcia, and Jijona, fields and hills are covered in a sea of white and pink. Planning a spring holiday on the Costa Blanca? Then your best starting point for a blossom tour is an accommodation in Alicante or the province of Alicante. From there you can easily reach several places that reward you with floral beauty!
One area where walkers love to admire the poetic blossom fields is the Jálon Valley. For this, it’s best to rent accommodation in Benidorm, Denia, or Jávea. From Benidorm, take provincial road 332 toward the eco-park in Alcalali. At the edge of this park is a parking area, which also serves as the starting point for an idyllic walk along the picturesque blossom trees.
Among all the almond trees, it’s worth noting that Spain is a major supplier of almonds. The nuts also play a vital role locally, for example in the production of the sweet treat Turron. Besides almonds, there’s another source of economic prosperity for the Costa Blanca: salt production. In Torrevieja, you’ll find important salt lakes that supply salt to Spain and for export. What’s special about these lakes is their pink hue due to the minerals, and they are surrounded by a vast salt flat. It almost feels like walking through a white desert.
Along the Costa Blanca, places like Benidorm and Alicante are often lively and busy. A seaside town where you’ll find a pleasant mix of good restaurants, accommodations, and shops on one hand, and a relaxed atmosphere on the other, is Moraira. Moraira is lively but not overly crowded. The range of accommodations mainly consists of villas and hotels near the beach. Many tourists are said to return to Moraira, not because of specific sights, but for the lively atmosphere combined with relative peace and luxury.
Are you tempted by the idea of spending a beach holiday on the Spanish coast, combined with unique attractions, excellent gastronomy, and lively seaside resorts? Then choose a hotel or holiday villa with a swimming pool in Jávea or Moraira during the summer—or trade the Dutch February cold for a blossom tour and a sunny springtime feeling in the province of Alicante!
