Want to experience the ultimate holiday feeling just under four hours’ drive from Amsterdam? Then visit the Eifel – the ultimate hiking and biking paradise in western Germany. Discover charming towns like Monschau with its idyllic half-timbered houses, conquer peaks like the Hohe Acht, or descend into the Ahr Valley and explore the wine region along the Ahr River. Booking a holiday home in the Eifel is a must, as there’s always something new to experience in this vast region!
The Eifel has everything you need for both an active and relaxing holiday. The best and most diverse possibilities can be found in the northern Eifel. Hike or cycle freely through the North Eifel, or test your legs in the DIMB BikePark Rureifel in Hürtgenwald. Mountain biking in both the North and Volcanic Eifel takes you along the most scenic trails. And around the Nürburgring racetrack, bikers can push their limits on the thrilling BULLS Hölle route.
For speed freaks, a visit to the Nürburgring is a must! You can even take your own car onto the legendary 22-kilometre track. Race like a real Formula 1 driver to the finish line of the Grand Prix circuit. Prefer a behind-the-scenes look? Enjoy a unique guided tour in and around the circuit or challenge others in the simulator-powered RaceRoom. End your virtual race in style with drinks and snacks on the VIP terrace.
If you prefer to slow things down, the Eifel offers vast beech forests and picturesque villages surrounded by rolling green hills. You’ll even find traces of volcanic activity over 10,000 years old! Follow the Volcanic Eifel scenic route, with crystal-clear crater lakes (called Maare) perfect for walking and cycling. Or take a refreshing dip in the still ‘bubbling’ Laacher See. Are you a water or water sports fan? The lakes west of the dam above the National Park, such as the Rursee and Obersee, are among the most popular spots for beach and water recreation in the Eifel!
Whenever possible, venture deep into the forests of the national park. In this vast area, covering 240 km of hiking trails, nature is allowed to take its course over the next thirty years with minimal human intervention. You may spot rare animals like the Eurasian eagle-owl, the black stork or even the wildcat. The wooden boardwalks through the Struffelt nature reserve are truly special. Even after rain, you can walk through this moorland without issue. Thanks to the raised trails, the Eifel is perfect for walking with children – especially on the accessible Wilder Kermeter route, which ends in a playful adventure track with balancing beams and stumps.
One of the most popular walking routes in the Eifel is the Rotweinwanderweg (Red Wine Trail). This grape-signed trail leads you right through the Ahr Valley’s vineyards. Here, forested slopes meet gently rolling wine hills – a true feast for the eyes! You walk from Altenahr to Bad Bodendorf, enjoying views of the vines and passing picturesque villages. One highlight is the hilltop ruin of Altenahr Castle.
Consider renting a holiday home in the Eifel in autumn! That’s when the vineyards of the Ahr Valley are at their most beautiful, with grape leaves turning shades from gold to deep red. Just be sure to wear good hiking shoes – the vineyard paths can be slippery!
Want even more spectacular views this fall? Don’t miss the Geierlay suspension bridge! At a dizzying height, you’ll sway across the narrow bridge over the Mörsdorfer Valley. In autumn, you’ll be treated to 360-degree views of a colourful sea of treetops!
If you’re intrigued by history, the Eifel won’t disappoint. Its rich past goes back millennia. Celts and Romans once inhabited the Eifel-Ardennes plateau, and traces of their presence remain – from Roman aqueducts in Nettersheim to the Otrang villa complex in Fließem.
A visit to Burg Eltz near Cochem takes you straight back to the time of knights and noblemen. Large parts of this fairytale castle were beautifully restored less than two centuries ago. With its ornate towers and turrets, it’s open to visitors daily from April through November. Walking up to the castle feels like stepping into an Efteling fairytale! Want more medieval magic? Head to Satzvey in the northern Eifel, where a 14th-century moated castle is still home to a noble family – and every year, they host knight tournaments complete with markets, minstrels, and noble ladies.
The vast Eifel region is larger than the entire Dutch province of Gelderland. Each direction – west, north, south or east – offers its own unique Eifel experience. The region even stretches into Belgium’s High Fens and the east of Luxembourg! Curious about what a multi-day stay across the border has to offer? Or ready for days of hiking or mountain biking near home? Rent a holiday home in the Eifel – your next adventure awaits!
